Here’s the MS-Paint “render” I set for myself many years ago.
And here she stands as of today (I should find a brick wall...)
with that said, I’ve put my dream car up for sale. #ShamelessSelfPromotion

I’d like to get a 2003 era Legacy sedan, and go from there.
Something that can be both toy and family hauler, and perhaps not get ruined by fjording blizzards in winter here in Colorado.

Hm. See if you can get parts from a similar era STi (there have to be crashed ones nearby) and make something that hauls ass?

yes/no. Just for longevity and ease of maintenance I’ll likely avoid the turbo subarus, but an engine swap and some go fast suspension parts are definitely brewing in my mind.

A Legacy GT would be a fun, comfy daily for sure.

Excellent. Worse comes to worse, steal a flat-four from a new Cayman/Boxster and slip it in (or a flat six from an older one? Could that fit?).

Get one of these!
It’s a detuned STI disguised as a family wagon. My dad had one and I am still pissed at him for selling it before I could drive it.

There’s always Subaru’s own flat 6, which was actually installed in Legacy/Outbacks...

in the generation i’m looking they had the 2.5l NOTORIOUS for nlown head gaskets. also a sunroof, which i dont want.
i’m likely aiming for the base model and build my own engine from there

They updated the gasket design sometime around 2004. They are now nowhere near as prone to fail as they were. Almost every engine has been updated to the new gasket at this point.

Just trying to help out with your next ridiculous idea. Your Summer Subaru project a few years ago was one of the first big things I remember reading on Oppo, so I’m all for your projects.

how nice of you to say :)
that gen impreza would have a strong pull too, I guess we’ll see (if the civic sells) if a legacy or inpreza come up on craigslsit first

I agree w/ the turbocharged squirrel. It’s impossible not to love a Legacy GT or Outback XT for DD duties.

I’m confused. If you’re not going turbo, but you’re not keeping the stock H4, what other option is there beside the H6? Unless you’re thinking of dropping a non-Subaru engine in there?

BETTER h4s. depending on the year and model the legacy had 2.0, 2.2, 2.5s, and some were stronger than others even within those sizes.
So pick a good strong motor used. Do a full rebuild for better performance and reliability. Pick a 6 speed instead of the 5 speed and a different rear diff. All possible within the subaru family and bolt in or with mild modifications.

Of course, if Subaru’s flat 6 fits... the Porsche M86/M87 should fit...
In any case, if you want to get REALLY crazy, Commer TS3 swap. 105 hp at 2400 RPM, three cylinder, six piston, 3.3 liter 2-stroke diesel.

Jeep is running great, ranger is running open headers rn and is off insurance. But if youre willing to chip in for a new cat for the ranger, youre welcome to borrow either. A new cat is only $175, but you know... broke college student
